The DVSA recommends around 45 hours of professional lessons in addition to private practice. The exact number of lessons you need will depend on your individual learning pace and previous experience.

Consistent practice, a solid understanding of the Highway Code, and taking mock driving tests with your instructor are the best ways to prepare. This helps you build confidence and identify areas for improvement.

While possible, we highly recommend using one of our dual-control cars. They are fitted with a second set of pedals for your instructor, ensuring your safety as you learn and reducing the risk of accidents.

Yes, we offer intensive driving courses. These are perfect for learners who want to pass their test quickly. We can tailor a course to fit your schedule and experience level.

For your first lesson, you must bring your provisional driving license. We also recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes to ensure you can operate the pedals with ease. A positive attitude is a great bonus!

You can book your official driving test online through the official DVSA website. We can also help you with this process once you're ready to book.

Don't worry, it happens to many people! If you fail, your instructor will review your test feedback with you and help you practice the areas you need to improve before rebooking your test.

Take a Test

Choose a test to prepare for your theory, hazard perception, or practical exam.

Practical Driving Test

Your instructor believes in you. If they say you're ready, trust your skills and prepare to drive independently. Here’s what you need to know to pass with confidence:

  • Location: Your test will be at your local test centre. Your instructor will drive you there for a quick practice run.
  • Length: The test lasts about 40 minutes, but it will fly by!
  • Eyesight Check: You must read a number plate from 20 meters away. Make sure to bring your glasses or contact lenses if you need them!
  • Show Me, Tell Me: You'll answer two questions on vehicle safety. One will be a "tell me" question before you start driving, and the other will be a "show me" question while you're driving.
  • Manoeuvres: The examiner will ask you to perform one of the following: reverse bay parking, parallel parking, or pulling up on the right-hand side of the road.
  • Independent Driving: You'll spend about 20 minutes driving independently. This might involve following a sat nav or traffic signs to a specific destination.

Provisional Driving License

To start your driving lessons, you must first apply for a provisional driving license. This license allows you to learn to drive on public roads under the supervision of a qualified instructor or a licensed driver over the age of 21.

Who can apply?

  • You must be a resident of Great Britain.
  • You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old.
  • You must be able to read a new-style number plate from 20 meters away.

How to apply

The quickest and easiest way is to apply online via the official GOV.UK website.

The Highway Code

Mastering the Highway Code is essential for passing your theory and practical tests and becoming a safe driver for life. Here are some of the key rules you'll need to know.

The Highway Code is not just a book of rules; it's a guide to safe and responsible driving. Following its principles helps prevent accidents and ensures a smooth experience for all road users. As a learner driver, mastering these rules is crucial for both your theory and practical tests.

  • Speed Limits: Always adhere to the designated speed limits. They are the maximum speed you can legally drive, not a target. Adjust your speed according to road, weather, and traffic conditions.
  • Traffic Signs: A crucial part of your theory test, understanding and obeying traffic signs and signals is vital for road safety.
  • Pedestrian Crossings: Always be prepared to stop for pedestrians at zebra crossings. At pelican and puffin crossings, wait for the pedestrian to fully cross before proceeding.
  • Use of Lanes: On motorways and multi-lane roads, stay in the left-most lane unless overtaking. Only use the right-hand lanes for passing slower traffic.
  • Mobile Phones: Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is illegal. This includes using it for navigation, texting, or making calls.
  • Alcohol & Drugs: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a serious offense. This includes prescription medication that may impair your ability to drive.
  • Seatbelts: It is a legal requirement for both the driver and all passengers to wear a seatbelt.

What First Car?

Choosing your first car can be daunting. We've put together some information on how to save on insurance and a few great car options for new drivers.

An insurance black box, also known as telematics insurance, is a device installed in your car that monitors your driving habits. It tracks speed, acceleration, braking, and time of travel to assess your risk level as a driver.

Benefits of a black box insurance policy include:

  • Lower Premiums: Safe driving can lead to reduced insurance costs.
  • Encourages Safe Driving: Helps new drivers develop better driving habits.
  • Vehicle Tracking: Some black boxes come with GPS tracking for added security.
